British zone visit from David Splane - a report from the special meeting in Glasgow
by slimboyfat inwell i went to a "special meeting" in the armadillo today where a 2 & 1/2 hour programme was relayed from london at 1pm.
apparently the letters of invitation only went out a month or so ago and not all congregations were invited.
there were 2,900 of us from around scotland.

Do David Splanes offensive and pompous orations have a silver lining?
by ranmac inim starting to think so.. i was still somewhat active in meeting and assembly attendance when i first started doubting the jw life.
when i first heard splane give a discourse, it was a real wake up call as to what kind of people are controling this organization.
the next time i heard him speak he was even worse.. as ive seen on this forum, many people have had the same experience.. in slimboyfats thread, http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/friends/251890/1/british-zone-visit-from-david-splane-a-report-from-the-special-meeting-in-glasgow, he noted this gem from splane: if traumatic things have happened in your past then just don't think about it, that's the best you can do until the new system.. this is one of the most irresponsible and rage inducing comments i have ever heard.

I find where I live the JWs have a very good understanding of mental health problems, because half the elders are on meds themselves!

Some odd developments
by dissonance_resolved inso things are not making sense at all here in my fade.
as i had posted earlier, i had a long intense talk the other night with my husband where i thought it was crystal clear just where i'm at right now with the wtbts.
then, the same week, he's not feeling well and asks me to take the kids to the mid-week meeting.

Bible Writers not just ignorant "goat herders"
by applehippie inreally, the bible was written by nothin' but goat herders?
i don't post much but this does irk me.
yes a few may have been shepherds or fisherman, but a fair amount were far more educated and were professionals in their fields of occupation.

In a time when most people were illiterate and formal education was reserved for the upper classes who weren't being stupified by the toil of subsistence farming etc, of course the Bible was written by educated people. Herodotus was way wrong on heaps of things in his histories, but you wouldn't call him uneducated. Same with bible writers.

Norman, it was a big deal because for years we were told at assemblies and that the internet was bad, and now they've turned around and embraced it. I thought at the time and still do, it's about time because that's where most people get their info. The wt was so behind the times on that one.

JWs suck
by new22day insorry for the inflammatory header but jws suck.
they live a lie and live in a self-imposed bubble judging 'worldlys' as less than.
fine if they want to be in a cult and judge fellow cult members but if they are going to step outside that cult and live among worldlys than they need need to follow the moral compass of society and be held to those standards.

Hey I used to be one of those! Not all of them suck, it's the culture that's been created that sucks. I feel sorry for most of them because they're good people in a bad situation. They're held in by webs of lies and familial pressures. There are a lot of pompous, self righteous twats, and maybe these are the ones who should go live on sole volcanic island.

Hey Phizzy, I haven't read those books. I've read bits of Greatest Show, and found he made a lot of speculation not based on actual evidence, but like I said I haven't read it all. I find Mr Dawkins makes some sweeping assertions, but hey, I can give him another go.

I'd be content with banishing them to a Stalinist gulag. Then they'd learn their true worth.

They don't have the time, what with all the meetings, witnessing, reading those publications, on top of making a living and or raising kids.
I often wondered how Neanderthals fitted into the picture too. I've done a bunch of study on evolution like most of us have, and I'm not convinced natural selection is what causes macro changes. Yes, minor speciation like what we can see with Queensland magpies vs Tasmanian magpies for instance, but not the development of whole new organs and systems. It's hard to get a fossil tetrapod and a fossil lizard and say one species eventually begat this one over millions of years, because if you dig up a grave yard you wouldn't be able to work out who was related to who over a generation without DNA tests, so fossils over millions of years? Yes, there is a clear progression of forms but natural selection as the agent of change is challenged these days by some.
There is some sort of divine or supernatural force in the universe I believe, and perhaps all these religious canons are humanity's attempts to capture that. Maybe Jesus really was divine but humans in their fallible way could only write from their limited perspective when writing the gospels.
As for the Neanderthals, perhaps they don't fit in because there is no in, just some stuff that was developed by some entity for the hell of it. I wouldn't have a clue. Perhaps they were the perfect ones...they seemed pretty peaceful.
